What can I sew from 1 m, 1.3 m or 2 m of fabric? The SEAMONE Fabric Planner

1.3 m of jersey from the fabric market, a piece of corduroy left over from your last project, a remnant that was simply too pretty to leave behind – and now the question: what can I sew with it? I know the feeling from my own shelf: fabrics I once bought "for something", and me leafing through the fabric requirement tables pattern by pattern. That is exactly what the SEAMONE Fabric Planner is for. Enter how much fabric you have and instantly see which patterns fit, in your size.

SEAMONE Fabric Planner on a phone: 1.3 m of fabric, women, EU 40 entered – below it nine matching sewing patterns with picture and fabric requirement, plus two patterns that are just short
1.3 m of fabric, women, EU 40: the Fabric Planner shows nine patterns that fit, with picture and amount – and below them Mølna and Mønsted, which are only just short.

How the Fabric Planner works

  1. Enter the amount of fabric – for example 1.3 m.
  2. Choose women or men and your size. Not sure of your size yet? Start with the size calculator – it also tells you whether to lengthen, shorten or do an FBA/SBA. That changes how much fabric you need, too.
  3. Choose the fabric type: woven (e.g. corduroy, denim, linen, poplin) or knit (e.g. jersey, sweatshirt fabric, knitted fabric) – and, if you like, the fabric group. That way no jersey tops turn up in the list when you're holding a piece of corduroy.

The Fabric Planner compares your amount with the fabric requirements from our size charts and shows you every pattern that fits – with picture, name and the amount that pattern needs in your size. Below that, under "Just short", you'll see the patterns that are only up to 30 cm short – a shorter version, a narrower hem or a second fabric for cuffs and facings might do the trick.

An example: 1.3 m of fabric, women, EU 40

That's the situation in the screenshot above. With 1.3 m, nine patterns fit: Follsjå, Rølla and Tissø, Rømø as the short version, Vendla, Holstebro as the short version, Fanø, Tofte as a tunic and Møn. Mølna and Mønsted need 1.55 m – just 25 cm short, and with a contrast fabric for the collar and cuffs Mølna works after all. With 1 m of fabric you still have Vendla, Holstebro (short), Fanø, Tofte and Møn. So a metre of fabric isn't a scrap – it's a top.

Variations save fabric

Many SEAMONE patterns have variations that need noticeably less fabric: a shorter length, shorts instead of long trousers, a tunic instead of a dress or a jumper instead of a jacket. The Fabric Planner always shows the largest variation that fits your amount and tells you which one it is – "as short", "as tunic". No need to open the instructions first to find out what your fabric can become.

Combining leftovers

Patterns with panels, like Spliid, can be sewn from two or three leftovers – the front from one, the sleeves from another. The Fabric Planner marks them. Then work out each piece separately using the cutting layout in the instructions, and lay the pieces out on the fabric once as a test before you cut.

Good to know

  • All amounts are for 140 cm wide fabric. If your fabric is narrower, you'll need more.
  • Lining and ribbing are not included.
  • Fabrics with a directional print or nap (corduroy, velvet, large motifs) often need a little more, because all pieces have to face the same way.
  • Prewash your fabric before cutting – it may shrink, especially cotton, linen and viscose. Measure the amount after washing and enter that in the Fabric Planner.

The Fabric Planner is available as a page of its own, on every product page under "Fabric requirements" and in the collections right next to the size calculator. And if your favourite pattern is still missing: the fabric data is being added pattern by pattern as the instructions move to the new design.
